Gendered Realities was an Annual Work Plan funded by the European Youth Foundation of the Council of Europe. The first activity was co-funded through a financial contribution through the Participation Programme of UNESCO. The Work Plan consisted of 2 International Activities and 1 phase of Local Actions. The project was organized by an international project team in collaboration with the Gender Blenders Working Group and volunteers from 12 project countries.

What’s the idea?

The Work Plan aimed at understanding better the different gendered realities existing in SCI activities. It addressed the topic in SCI globally and focused on assessing how safe and inclusive our activities really are. It supported existing efforts of SCI members in the gender field, pooled resources and particularly furthered the development of a toolkit which supports leaders in making their activities inclusive for all gender identities.

The Work Plan was implemented in 3 key phases:

1. International Study Session on Gender (Tirana, Albania, 12 - 17 February 2019): meeting of 25 participants to develop a common understanding of the gender topic, map existing efforts to address gender issues within SCI and work on 3 key outputs. Read all about it here.

2. Local Actions (partner countries/ global, March - October 2019): 14 local SCI groups had the opportunity to run local actions, with lengths of 1 or 5-10 days, addressing a specific gender issue affecting their local reality. Check here how the Local Actions went!

3. Campaigning Training (Rome, Italy, November 2019): a 6-day training, meant to equip participants with the skills to construct and run a successful campaign. It was also a chance to review the project and its results, and create a strategy for how to address these beyond the project's lifetime.

During the project, some important resources were produced:

The 'Free to be You and Me' gender toolkitavailable in 5 versions online and in print (long version in English plus short versions in English, Albanian, Bulgarian and Serbian), this toolkit provides comprehensive information on gender and sexuality, along with practical guidelines and easy-to-use tools, with the aim of helping leaders to address the topic of gender and sexuality in their activities.

The Gender Assessment Toolan online survey designed to help us answer the following questions:

  • Does gender or sexuality affect people’s experiences at SCI activities?
  • Are there situations or procedures that make people feel discriminated based on their gender?
  • Do people feel confident in recognizing and addressing gender-based discrimination during SCI activities?

The survey was conducted between June and September 2019 and managed to collect responses from more than 100 workcamp participants, workcamp coordinators and participants in international training courses and seminars. The main findings of the survey are presented in the booklet "Time to Face Gendered Realities," produced and published in November 2019 as part of an SCI campaign to promote the inclusion of gender perspectives within SCI's practices and activities. Besides presenting the main findings of the survey, the booklet proposes a number of recommendations for making SCI's practices and activities more gender-sensitive. The recommendations are also listed here.

Finally, as part of SCI campaign, some gender-sensitive name tags were created to be shared within and outside the movement, to encourage everybody to go beyond a binary understanding of gender and think about this as a spectrum.

If you would like to use the name tags during your activities, download them from the link and print them on Avery's address labels L7173 (you can buy these online or in a shop; when you print them, don't forget to adjust your printer's settings by checking the boxes "Actual size" and "Choose paper source by PDF page size.") or contact This email address is being protected from spambots.
