About Building Bridges

Many SCI branches have various and long-term experiences in the implementation of projects and activities with refugees and asylum seekers. These experiences have been discussed at several occasions throughout the last years at international SCI meetings. Just before the refugee crisis of the summer 2015, SCI activists gathered at a seminar in Switzerland and exchanged their experiences in order to create a common toolkit to share know-how.

The ICM 2015 adopted a recommendation drafted by SCI activists to launch a grass-root campaign in SCI workcamps in 2016. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness and stimulate the reflection about the current refugee crisis and forced migration in general.

The campaign includes the following activities:

workcamps on the topic of refugees and asylum seekers or including them as volunteers (see guidelines)
• study sessions to be implemented in SCI workcamps
materials and methods to be used by branches and partners willing to get active on the topic
microgrants for small projects
seminars and trainings

The Building Bridges Group:

“Building Bridges” is an informal working group within the SCI International’s network. It was established during the creation of the Building Bridges Toolkit by a group of SCI activists which are leading successful projects in the field of forced migration. The aim of the working group is to coordinate SCI’s efforts to raise awareness on the topic and to promote peace, understanding and integration between locals, refugees, and asylum seekers.
