About: Gendered Realities

Gendered Realities is an Annual Work Plan funded by the European Youth Foundation of the Council of Europe. The first activity is co-funded through a financial contribution through the Participation Programme of UNESCO. The Work Plan consists of 2 International Activities and 1 phase of Local Actions. The project is organized by an international project team in collaboration with volunteers from 12 project countries.

What’s the idea?

The Work Plan aims to understand better the different gendered realities existing in SCI activities. It will address the topic in SCI globally and focus on assessing how safe and inclusive our activities really are. It will support existing efforts of SCI members in the gender field, pool resources and particularly further the development of a toolkit Free to be Me and You (1 extensive English version; 3 translated short versions).

In SCI as a movement, and to (young) people we work with, we want to bring the topic into greater attention. With a better understanding of the situation and our needs, we will combat gender discrimination through preparing an international campaign and planning follow-up activities focusing on the inclusiveness and safety of SCI activities.

Expected overall project outcomes and outputs:

- Improved understanding of gendered realities in SCI, including existing assessment tools, partners approaches and used methodologies;
- Assessment tool to analyse SCI activities;
- Toolkit with practical methodologies to address gender inequality and discrimination (extensive version in English; 3 short versions in 3 local languages of Balkan countries);
- Local actions to combat gender stereotypes and discrimination through workshops and campaigning;
- Material and foundations for the launch of a “Gender Campaign” with wide range to inform and empower young individuals.

International Study Session on Gender (Tirana, Albania, 12 - 17 February 2019)

In February, a group of 25 participants from 11+ countries met to map and analyse existing efforts to address the gender topic within in SCI, in order to:

  1. Find out what tools are currently available for assessing gender (inequality);
  2. Organise teams to work on improving these tools for use throughout 2019 (and beyond);
  3. Identify which tools are missing, and work on their creation;
  4. Finalise a strategy for completing an assessment of SCI's activities.

Key outputs of the Session were:

- Connection of youth leaders/ volunteers in dialogue to explore and exchange approaches, experiences and tools related to gender inclusivity and discrimination;
- Focus on gender issues in the Albanian (and Balkan) reality;
- Development of a gender toolkit;
- Development of a new assessment tool for participants/ volunteers, and working on a self-assessment tool for organisations.

Gender Ambassadors:

Participants to the International Study Session have become “Gender Ambassadors” - volunteers/ coordinators/ experts motivated to carry on the assessment and/or to organize local activities who understand the (basics of) gender problematics.

Following the meeting in February, we aim to encourage all Gender Ambassadors to join the project in two possible ways:

  1. Helping to carry out the assessment (building an Assessment Team to collect and/or analyse data);
  2. Organizing/facilitating follow up activities (we will open a call for organizing 14 follow up activities (10 workshops; 4 workcamps) - we encourage partners to pitch their ideas

Volunteer Follow-Up Actions (Partner Countries/Global, March - October, 2019)

We will reach out to (young) people all over Europe with workshops, small awareness raising events and with Workcamps dealing with the topic of Gender, and meanwhile carrying out the assessment.

- Local actions: The project can support 4 actions with longer duration (5+ days e.g. Workcamps) and also 10 actions (1 day or shorter, e.g. workshops). The idea is that Gender Ambassadors try out methodologies in workshops or organize small awareness raising events together with partners or peers in their local communities.

- Assessment: The assessment tool, as output of the first activity, is being disseminated and used to gain a better understanding of the situation and safety of SCI activities. 

In the aftermath the Assessment Team and Project Team will will reflect different actions that took place and evaluate the outcome of the Assessment to identify target group(s) and suitable tools to draft a concept for an International Gender Campaign which will be followed up more closely in Activity 3, the Campaigning Training.

Campaigning Training (Rome, Italy, November 2019)

As a follow-up of the first two phases, we will meet with the Assessment Team and a wider pool of young activists from across the SCI network in order to develop capacities in communication and strategy to design and implement creative and wide-reaching campaigns. In the preparation we will evaluate the assessment and gather essential input on the campaign concept from broader SCI pool, in order to ‘bridge the gap’ between ‘gender experts’ and ‘others’ and make the campaign more accessible.

Expected outcomes will be:

- Equip volunteers to organize a major European campaign to mobilize (young) people outside SCI;

- Formulate the key message of the gender focus group with the intention to run a larger campaign across SCI in 2020.
