"A drop harvested is a crop harvested"

“Water Harvesting Project” is the newly implemented project of South Africa Volunteer Work Camp Association, supported by GAIA MicroGrants. Over the past few years there have been terrible droughts in South Africa and the overall goal of the 2018 SAVWA Water Harvesting Project was to increase access to clean water and improve food security and livelihoods of the Soshanguve community. The main activities were to install a water tank in order to collect rainwater, but also to develop small home gardens for food production.

Participants, volunteers from Soshanguve, Johannesburg and one international volunteer from USA, created a concrete slab for the water tank to be placed on, prepared roof gutters, and installed a gutter. They also worked in food gardens, taking out old vegetable plants and planted new crops. Gardening activities brought local curious children to come by and help planting vegetables and to spend time with the volunteers.

In November SAVWA are running an online fundraising campaign to try to cover some of the project costs.

You can join the campaign and help this project to reach the goal - https://donate.seedmoney.org/2282/savwa-community-permacultural-gardening-project.
