International volunteers help put the Show on the road

On 23rd Feb, eight international volunteers stepped off the train in Goulburn, Australia, on their way to their project assisting the Agricultural Show Committee.  Over the next two weeks they worked hard setting up for the show and packing away afterwards, and in between work had cultural excursions to Canberra and local farms.  Apart from the intrinsic reward of helping a worthwhile community cause, they gained insight into Australian rural life and a country town, while making lasting friendships and gaining intercultural competencies.

This is the second year IVP have collaborated on this project and it was even more successful than the first year. The team came from Laos, Italy, Japan and Vietnam.  They worked well as a team and all said it was their best workcamp ever. One great thing about this camp is that the volunteers are working with a big team of local volunteers, a lot of whom are farmers or crafts people, and each have an interesting story.  The appreciation on both sides was heart-warming and the show was a great success with several thousand people coming through the gates over the two days of the Show.

It will be on again next year and several of the volunteers want to return.
