SCI Malaysia's celebration of the International Day of Peace

SCI Malaysia tells us all about the way they celebrated this year's International Day of Peace.

The International Day of Peace (IDP), an annual day of non-violence and cease-fire. It’s a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. Officially on the 21 Sept, it is observed on the 23 and 24th Sept here this year.
The IDP was established in 1981 by resolution 36/67 of the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening session, and was first observed in September 1982.

The theme of this year’s “Together for Peace – Respect, Safety and Dignity for All” is to honour the spirit of Togetherness, a global initiative that promotes respect, safety and dignity for everyone in search for a better life. Together too let us build bridges and transform fear into hope and bringing people, reminding people of our common humanity.

A coalition of NGOs, the Service Civil International, (SCI) , the Kelana Jaya RT, INSaF / PLS, Partners for Peace Malaysia, , HANDS, MYCOM, MIPAS, Yayasan Salam Malaysia and over 50 others NGOs have been celebrating this significant event in our Peace Calendar in our effort to promote Peace, Harmony and Unity in our multi-racial and multi-cultural community for the past 14 years.

The program for the 2 days starts with the Launch of the Peace Promenade with Interfaith Prayers for Peace and Flag off of the Peace Convoy at PLS on the Sat’s morning. The Peace Convoy have a stop-over at Gunung Lang, Ipoh for Lunch and a commemorative event. The Peace Convoy from JB and KL would meet up the Penang’s Convoy at St Georges Inst, Taiping for a Peace Lecture and unveil the 1st Peace Pole in a school. The Peace Convoy participants and Locals NGOs had a Together for Peace Dinner, with songs, dances, videos and sharing by Peace Activists.

The highlight for the next day, 24th Sept would be a Public Aerobic exercise, Cycle for Peace, Tree planting, Cultural Dances, Art competition, Peace Exhibition will be jointly hosted by the Majlis Perbandaran Taiping where about 1000 to 1500 people attended. The Prof Dato Dr Anwar Fazal, and the Ambassador from Bosnia attended the launch of the Peace Dome concept on the morning itself too.

The event succeeded in bringing in a cross section of our community to participate, young and old and people of different Faiths. The activities were very varied, interesting and helps to promote the Theme for this year too.
