Gender Blenders Working Group

Gender Blender

Our mission:

To make SCI branches, partners and activities gender sensitive and inclusive.

We believe that it is not possible to have a culture of peace and non-violence if people are being stigmatized, discriminated or experience violence (structural, cultural, direct) because of their gender or sexuality. Therefore we want to raise awareness on the connection of gender and sexuality stereotypes and their connections to peace and non-violence (in general and in our activities), promote gender education, and support branches in creating volunteer camps and LTV/ EVS positions related to our topics.

 Our work:

In 2013, a discussion about the connection between gender-based violence and war arose within the No More War team of SCI. This inspired a series of activities on the topic of gender, beginning in 2015, which resulted in the creation of the Gender Blenders.

These activities have been:

The Gender Blenders have published a resource, a toolkit for youth workers, volunteer coordinators and trainers called "Free to be You and Me".

It provides comprehensive information on gender and sexuality, along with practical guidelines and easy-to-use tools, with the aim of helping leaders to address the topic of gender and sexuality in their activities. It is hoped that this will be a tool which helps to make activities more safe and inclusive for all, regardless of gender identity or sexuality.

Its development and publication was supported by the European Youth Foundation (Work Plan 29.WP.2019, "Gendered Realities") and the UNESCO Participation Programme 2018-2019.

You can also find shorter versions in English, Albanian, Bulgarian and Serbian.
