1 in 3 women – about 1 billion - across the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. Are we sure that today is the day of love? Which love?
Have you ever heard about the V-Day? It’s a global movement of activists against violence towards women and young girls. It’s a movement which promotes events to raise awareness about women and their rights, that fundraises and promotes courage against all types of violence, against genital mutilation, against rapes, incest and sex slavery.
“Every February, we rise – in hundreds of countries across the world – to show our local communities and the world what one billion looks like and shine a light on the rampant impunity and injustice that survivors most often face. We rise through dance to express joy and community and and celebrate the fact that we have not been defeated by this violence. We rise to show we are determined to create a new kind of consciousness – one where violence will be resisted until it is unthinkable”.
This year, One Billion Rising Revolution is giving sharper focus and visibility to the exploitation of women, and to harnessing even stronger global solidarity to demand an end to violence in all forms. The VDay event today are in several city around the world today, here you can find a map and check the event nearest to you.
On twitter you can follow the movement and tag your photo with the hashtag #1billionraising and #riseinsolidarity.
Saint Valentines day changed in this way from flowers and chocolates which people often forget into a real and proper love for women: the end of violence against women. The stopping of abuse and oppression that women and girls have to go through at home, at work and on the streets.
