We have lots of new beginnings at the International Secretariat this month! Last week, we welcomed Alena, our new Project Officer. This morning, Angeliki had a short interview with Alena who answered some questions about her first week with us and what she will be working on in the coming months. Find out more!

What was your motivation for applying for this position?

The key triggers were: working on international projects, working for a volunteer organisation, working in an intercultural environment in Antwerp, working part-time.

In the past 12 years I have been active in the field of non-formal education and international youthwork, organising intercultural projects on the European level as a volunteer coordinator, project manager, trainer and project assessor. It all started in 2012 when I joined my first international workcamp in Germany and later that year started to volunteer for Duha, the SCI partner organisation in the Czech republic where I come from. I loved the five years I was working there and hope to find a similar positive vibe in SCI.

Tell us 3 things that made you impression the first day in the office.

My first day was really nice. I was welcomed by a home made cake and warm smiles of my colleagues which made me feel like at a friends home. I immediately liked the office for its light and walls full of maps and colourful pictures. The kitchen also gives an impression of a true do-it-yourself space, where you can contribute with any initiative you feel like, e.g. making a bench out of a pallet, save some plants or make it cosier in any possible way. I like that and am already thinking how to give it a bit of a warmer touch.

What is the most difficult thing that you think you will face working in the International Secretariat?

Not sure yet. We´ll see about that. At the moment the challenge will be to leave home on time to pick up my little daughter from a day-care center.

What are the main 5 tasks of your new job?

I am excited to be working on the PATH and Peers to Peace projects that are both about to start this autumn. I´ll be also helping with finalising the evaluation report from the Glovola project, supporting SCI with managing other grants like the Work Plan from European Youth Foundation. That means lots of contact with SCI people and branches, taking part in the projects and I am looking forward to our cooperation and meeting you all.

SCI loves inspirational quotes. You? What is your personal favourite one?

Wish it, dream it, do it. (Says a board from a flea market I receievd from a friend of mine a couple of years back).

If you want to reach Alena you can contact her on programmes@sci.ngo.

We are delighted to have Alena join our team, welcome!
