International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia: “A global celebration of sexual and gender diversities”

Why May 17?
May 17 has established itself as the single most important date for LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) communities to mobilise on a worldwide scale.

The International Day Against Homophobia,Transphobia and Biphobia is celebrated in more than 130 countries as a support to people experiencing violence and discrimination due to sexual orientation, and gender identity or expression.

What is #IDAHOT?
The first title of the name was “International Day against Homophobia” coming from the acronym “I.DA.HO”. In 2009, Transphobia was added and then “IDAHOT” became another popular acronym used alongside the initial one. Since 2015, biphobia is added to the title, to acknowledge the specific issues faced by bisexual people.

Some indicative numbers

  • In about 80 countries same sex relationships are still illegal
  • In 10 countries people in same sex relationships could face the death penalty.
  • 70% of the world population live under laws and regulations that limit freedom of expression around sexual orientation and gender identity.
  • Until 17th May 1990 homosexuality was listed as a mental disorder by the World Health Organization.

“The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia represents a moment when different groups coexist and come together under a same agenda, which gives a necessary complement to more specific dates that allow particular visibilities and empowerments, for example of Trans people.” (Brazil)
