Refugee Fund - Open for Applications

Posted by projects on May 14

The aggravation of the crisis in Europe in summer 2015 has moved a number of branches and activists to provide additional local help to refugees on the move and at their arrival

Considering the positive effects of such efforts and their coherence with SCI mission and history, at SCI's International Committee Meeting 2015 branches proposed and approved an Urgent Resolution aimed at providing small and easily accessible funds to groups and branches planning projects and actions with and for refugees, lowering barriers to connect with locals and promoting mutual understanding.

World Radio Day and Radio Ghetto's Experience

Posted by projects on Feb 15

Why celebrate World Radio Day?

The first edition of world radio day was celebrated on 13/02/2012

Unesco decided to celebrate this media for the following reasons:
“Radio is the mass media reaching the widest audience in the world. It is also recognized as a powerful communication tool and a low cost medium. Radio is specifically suited to reach remote communities and vulnerable people: the illiterate, the disabled, women, youth and the poor, while offering a platform to intervene in the public debate, irrespective of people’s educational level.”

On this day radio is promoted as an important mass media, able to reach a very wide audience all over the world, especially in times of emergency and disaster, communicating the 5 following messages:
1. Freedom of expression and journalist’s safety should be disaster-proof.
2. Radio empowers survivors and vulnerable people, whose right to privacy is to be respected.
3. Radio has social impact and provides access to information. People’s right to information should be protected even in times of emergency and disaster.
4. Radio saves lives.
5. The immediate accessibility of radio frequencies is essential to saving lives. These frequencies should be protected so they are available in times of emergency.
